At the close of a jam-packed weekend, having traveled to Indianapolis for the National Catholic Youth Conference with our group from the Fargo and Crookston dioceses, I was posed a thought-provoking question: "What was your take-away from the weekend?" Although I was not immediately able to put it into words, I will attempt to do so now. A message that came out, for me, was an echoing of Pope Francis' words in his recent letter to youth: friendship with Christ. This touched me on a very personal level, even though it is not a new concept. I am invited to friendship with Him, and to be a disciple. I am not just one among many in a large organization, but am able to have a personal, daily friendship with Him. I am called, as an individual, to be His follower. This is truly amazing! I might ask myself: "What, then, does this mean to me? What does it mean to be His friend? I think it can mean several things. I'll name a few... I can talk to Him throughout the day, but I also am privileged to have special moments with Him in quiet prayer time. He is listening, and invites me to pause and listen to Him, too. I can share with Him my struggles, and He is there for me. As a side-not, it is pretty cool to have a friend to Whom "all power in heaven and on earth has been given." (Matt. 28:18) If I should feel lonely or in need of a friend, I don't have to look far. This weekend also reminded me that we have friends throughout the world, brothers and sisters who are on the same journey.
